Nurturing the TinderPulling away from their kiss, they smiled and laughed. He caressed her hand as gentle as their first touch. She remembered his touch being unique in a way roughened fingers and feather-light stroke only could be. She could not stop smiling with her gleaming grin of pearl.
"I have a surprise for you," he whispered. He slipped off the couch and strolled to the fridge. " I wasn't expecting you, but I started practicing-in the pathetically small chance I'd have an opportunity to give you one of these."
"Oh! What is it," she asked curiously. She gasped when she saw what he pulled out from within the refrigerator drawer. A raspberry swirl cheesecake topped with chocolate shavings lay on a simple pie platter. "You remembered." He nodded and began cutting her a piece.
When they each had a slice, they sat down at the dining table. They continued to talk about what they had missed, what things had changed, and what had stayed the same. An hour passed, and they were laughing again.
"What about a
Final RepriseThe remainder of the drive slipped by in silence as they contemplated what each had to say to one another. He could not help but believe that saying just the wrong thing would drive her away once again. He would always have his career. He may eventually have another love. Yet, none of those things would help him forget that he'd always love her.
"You are too quiet," she finally said as they were pulling into his driveway. He nodded and opened the door.
"Do you--do you think that this will work?"
"We have grown, matured, and changed. The hardest part was getting to this point-- to seeing that I still wanted you despite the years." He took her hand, and they walked inside. He put on a pot of coffee, and they began to talk.
They talked like they once had, jumping from topic to topic. After a while, something happened to him that had not happened for a long time. He smiled without a single worry.
"I have missed this," she whispered. "I want to stay."
"For us to have a real chance, we have
Final Fate of the Servants of the MoonA whistling echoed up the stairway, and a telltale jingling followed. The second sentry reached the guard post at the top of one of the temples eight sentinel towers.
"Reeve, you couldn't sneak up on a deaf man," a sweet but firm voice called. The new arrival found the voice coming from his partner's usual spot with her legs up, peering out over the forest-lined cliffs that surround their home in the Temple of Darkness.
"Hello, darlin'," he called back. "We are on guard duty. Sneaking is not our job." She chuckled, not taking an eye from the ridgeline. Taking a seat beside her, he laid his equipment on the wooden table where she rested her feet. Breaking her gaze for only a moment, she kissed him with as much tenderness as the first day they met.
"Gone are the times in Recon. Where stealth and skill kept us alive," she whispered. Reeve twirled a knife out of boredom, remembering the days of unrest years ago.
"Rica, the war ended. Not soon enough," he said, pausing. "If only it had stay
What is wrong with us?"What is wrong with us?"
"What is that supposed to mean?" she exclaimed. The car veered left onto the interchange ramp, cruised around the loop, and sped further away from the city lights. He thought back, chuckling.
"I remember there being a point. Seemingly, we had so many things in common. I was certain that you agreed with my wants just to please me."
"That is just paranoid," she giggled, shaking her head. "Still, maybe we weren't ready back then. We needed to grow up."
"I suppose," he agreed quietly. "Despite everything I tried--even my most desperate quest for distraction-- I still loved you. I missed you severely, and I wanted nothing more than a second chance. Yet, some part of me knew I didn't deserve one."
"I kept coming back to you with me sins and troubles. I should have seen the signs."
With the city lights far behind, the star light shone in the night, and the moon rose over the mountains.
"But, I must know. Can you really forgive me? There is no point in burying the hatc
To Take a Leap of Faith"I am waiting at the curb," his phone showed after buzzing. "The worst thing I could ever do is leave her waiting again," the man said aloud. He revved the engine and shifted his car into gear. The car backed out then lurched forward. The car hugged the corners as he took them much faster than he ought. He slipped through the parking lot toward the terminal exit, fearing that if a second was wasted his fortitude would falter and he would flee.
Yet, he did not. From the exit, he could see her with her bags, restlessly shifting among the few other late evening arrivals. He flashed his headlights and rounded the corner. He slowed to a stop, heart pounding.
Silently, he opened the door, helped her with her bags, and she slid into the front seat. He dropped into the driver's side and pulled away from the terminal.
" I know...this was hasty, but..." she started.
"No," he said. "I've wanted this for so long..." He sighed. He accelerated through the vacant old town streets as each light
Amorous Renaissance?Dulled music seeped through the speakers. Any lower and the maddening silence while anxiously waiting may bring him to breaking, and any louder would shudder his nerves further. Aside from the faint scream of jet engines taking off from the terminal's runways, no other sound entered the confines of his vehicle.
The man stared blankly forward, tapping and flipping his cell phone as minutes ticked onward. "Is she really coming," he murmured. Minute after minute, the songs changed without thought. Then, his phone chirped and buzzed. Another moment passed before checking the message. "Landed," displayed on the screen. He inhaled deeply, gripping the stick shift. High-school sweethearts, college lovers, finally, strangers, he wondered if she had really wanted him or if his often commended tongue had lured her back. He read her final message sent before she had departed.
"I want to do this," he read over and over again. She had left her husband only the day before. Again, on her assura
